Sony FX5: What Does It Change for Your Workflow?

With many cameras now delivering equally impressive results, what features become the deciding factors? We’ve explored this here before, where the choice often comes down to the desired workflow, but with the arrival of the FX5, what does this mean for Sony’s Cinema Line? Where does this new camera fit in, and which types of shooting does it benefit the most? Let’s explore through its recording, usability and form factor to find out.

For filmmakers looking for greater image flexibility without moving into a larger cinema camera package, the FX5’s sensor and recording capabilities are a major draw. Its newly developed full-frame stacked sensor delivers 15+ stops of dynamic range in S-Log3, whilst its three base ISO settings (800, 4000 and 12800) give you more flexibility when moving between different lighting conditions. Combined with internal 16-bit scene-linear X-OCN recording, this provides considerably more image information to work with in post, which is particularly useful when preserving detail in challenging highlights or low-light scenes. Likewise, its Open Gate recording is great at realising detail, with its full-frame 5K 3:2 mode capturing more of the sensor vertically. This gives greater freedom to reframe in post, which is handy when you have different aspect ratios and deliverables. At launch, Open Gate is available through X-OCN, with Sony planning to add 3:2 XAVC S-I recording through a future firmware update. That makes the FX5 an attractive option for productions that value capture flexibility, but it is worth checking the intended codec before building the workflow around a particular mode.

For filmmakers chasing a more distinctive cinematic look, the FX5 also facilitates an easier anamorphic experience. Its built-in de-squeeze supports 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.6x, 1.8x and 2.0x ratios, allowing you to see the intended widescreen image as you shoot. Rather than mentally compensating for the squeezed picture, operators can embrace lenses' anamorphic character, including their distinctive flares, oval bokeh and wider field of view. However, stabilisation cannot be used whilst anamorphic de-squeeze is enabled, so handheld operators do need to look elsewhere for support, whether that be through a stabilised lens, rigging or post-production edit. It is therefore a feature that suits more considered, cinematic setups.

If stabilisation is needed, the FX5’s Dynamic Active stabilisation is for those who need to move with the camera whilst keeping the setup compact. It applies stronger electronic correction than Active mode, making it useful for walking shots and other situations where a gimbal or larger support system just isn't practical. The catch is that the stronger the stabilisation, the narrower the field of view. Dynamic Active is also unavailable when recording X-OCN. This creates a genuine choice between maximum capture flexibility and maximum in-camera movement correction; documentary and lightweight handheld shooters may favour the latter, whilst an X-OCN workflow may call for more conventional camera support.

It is also important to flag that, unlike the FX3, the FX5 is designed purely around moving images, with no stills-shooting workflow. Closer in philosophy to cinema bodies such as the FX6 and Burano, this will be irrelevant to productions where the camera is dedicated to video, but it is worth considering for filmmakers coming from Sony’s FX3 or Alpha cameras. For a video-only production, it can actually make the FX5’s controls and design feel more purposeful; for hybrid shooters, though, the FX3 retains an advantage.

In a similar vein, moving on to the FX5’s usability, this will feel most familiar to operators coming from Sony’s higher-end CineAlta cameras. Its BIG6 HOME screen brings key shooting controls together, whilst the multi-function dial provides physical access to settings without relying entirely on the touchscreen. Waveform, histogram, false colour and focus map are also built into the monitoring tools, providing more precise ways to assess exposure, skin tones and focus, something which is particularly useful when in Log and changing light situations. Both are a meaningful shift from the Alpha-influenced cameras, meaning those used to Sony’s mirrorless workflows may need a little time to adjust. There is also a practical interruption to consider with RAW: changing recording formats can require the camera to reboot, and recording-format settings cannot be changed during playback. Hardly a deal-breaker, but it is worth considering and adjusting to when on a quick multi-setup shoot.

Physically, the FX5 is designed to be more comfortable and practical as a cinema camera without losing its compact appeal. The deeper grip, larger 3.5-inch four-axis LCD and additional tripod mounting point make it easier to hold, position and monitor, particularly when shooting handheld or building a lightweight rig. It's consequently a little heavier and has a different control layout to the FX3, but that extra physical presence is part of what makes it feel more like a dedicated production camera. Its smaller footprint does come with some compromises compared to the FX6, though. Most notably, there is no built-in variable ND, so maintaining a particular aperture and shutter speed in changing exterior light requires external filtration. It also doesn't offer the same level of dedicated professional I/O as the FX6, which remains better suited to fast-moving professional run-and-gun work where integrated ND and connectivity can save time. The FX5 instead makes a stronger case where keeping the camera compact and building only the accessories you actually need is more important.

These accessories let you push the FX5 towards different production styles. The optional DVF-EL1 OLED viewfinder gives operators a more traditional eyepiece for bright outdoor conditions and handheld shooting, whilst the XLR-H2 handle adds two XLR/TRS inputs and up to four-channel, 32-bit float audio. Both can make the FX5 considerably more self-contained, but they cannot be mounted simultaneously because they use the same Multi Interface Shoe. So again, the choice comes down to workflow: prioritise the viewfinder for daylight and operator-focused work, or the XLR unit when integrated professional audio is more important. The new NP-SA100 battery also forms part of the FX5 ecosystem, while its USB-C connections support power delivery and timecode through the appropriate adapter.

Ultimately, the FX5 is less about replacing the FX3 or FX6 and more about occupying a space between their workflows. It brings Open Gate, internal 16-bit X-OCN, high-sensitivity capture and more CineAlta-style operation into a relatively compact body, whilst giving you the flexibility to build the camera around the way you shoot. That makes it particularly interesting for productions that need more from the image and controls without necessarily needing a larger cinema camera. But if you need the FX6’s variable ND and professional run-and-gun connectivity, or the FX3’s simpler hybrid-friendly approach, those cameras can still be the better fit. As ever, consider the whole package – lenses, filtration, audio, monitoring, media, power and support – and choose the camera that makes the rest of the shoot work better.
